Preparing & Shipping Your Bird for Taxidermy
So, you just harvested a bird and want it mounted? Here's what to do next to ensure the best quality result:
Field Care: How to Prepare Your Bird
Check the Bird's Quality
Before anything else, inspect your bird for damage or missing feathers. The better the condition, the better the final mount.
2. Cool Down Before Freezing
Allow your bird to cool completely before wrapping—never freeze it while it's still warm.
3. Proper Wrapping for Freezer Storage
Fold the wings tightly against the body.
Tuck the head neatly under a wing or against the breast.
Wrap the entire bird in several layers of plastic wrap, ensuring feathers stay in place.
Place the wrapped bird into 2–3 freezer Ziploc bags or a contractor-grade trash bag to protect against freezer burn.
Store in your freezer until you can bring it in.
Shipping Birds to Coyote Mint Studios
Yes—we gladly accept out-of-state birds! Just follow these steps to ship your specimen safely and legally within the U.S.:
Fill Out a Migratory Bird Tag
This is required by law. All birds must have a properly completed migratory bird tag included in the box.
No tag = the bird will be destroyed upon arrival. No exceptions.
2. Package It Properly
Place your wrapped, frozen bird inside a Styrofoam cooler with a couple of ice packs.
Then put the cooler into a cardboard shipping box.
3. Shipping Guidelines
Ship via UPS or FedEx only — never USPS.
Ship on Mondays only to avoid weekend delays.
Contact Coyote Mint before shipping to get the address and let us know your package is on the way.
What Happens Next?
Once I receive your bird, I will skin and inspect it within 24 hours.
At that point, we'll confirm the pose and habitat.
A 50% deposit will then be required before I begin mounting.
No deposit is needed until the bird is confirmed to be in mountable condition.
Questions?
Message me anytime—I'm happy to help you through the process.
